There are solemn monuments built to celebrate great achievements, and then there are simpler symbols that become part of a city’s everyday memory.
One of these is the Octopus of Rapallo.
For years, with its bronze tentacles, the Octopus Fountain welcomed residents and visitors along the Vittorio Veneto seafront. It was not merely a fountain, but a landmark, a meeting place and a familiar image associated with walks by the sea.
The marine creature overlooks the Gulf of Tigullio, hiding among the rocks, watching the seabed and moving with silent elegance: almost like a small guardian of Rapallo’s sea.
The bronze statue was created by the sculptor Italo Primi.
But for many residents, the Octopus was more than just a work of art.
It was the place where people arranged to meet. “See you at the Octopus” was a simple phrase that everyone understood.
